Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how AttendEase (Android package name: com.attendease.bunksmart, referred to as "the App", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the App. This policy applies to all users of AttendEase.

By installing or using AttendEase, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and agree to its terms. If you do not agree, please uninstall the App immediately.

2. Information We Collect

AttendEase is designed as a local-first, offline-first application. The vast majority of your data stays entirely on your device and is never transmitted to any server. Below is an honest and exhaustive breakdown of all data the App handles:

A. Data Stored Locally on Your Device Only (NEVER sent to our servers):

  • Attendance Records: Your daily attendance logs for each subject (Present, Absent, Late, Cancelled status).
  • Timetable & Schedule: Class schedules, time slots, day-of-week mappings, and subject configurations.
  • Classroom Coordinates: The geographic latitude, longitude, and radius boundaries you configure for auto-marking. These GPS coordinates are stored in a local SQLite database and are never uploaded, transmitted, or shared unless you explicitly choose to.
  • Assignments: Due dates, titles, weightage, and completion status.
  • Holidays: Custom holidays, college events, and leave entries.
  • App Preferences: Theme selection, notification preferences, and local settings.

Important: We have zero access to any of this data. It exists solely on your physical device. Uninstalling the App or clearing app storage permanently deletes this data, and we cannot recover it.

B. Data Transmitted to Our Servers (Only if you voluntarily create an account and enable Cloud Sync or opt-in to improve the app):

Cloud Sync is an opt-in feature available to Pro subscribers. If you choose not to sign up or not to enable sync, none of the data below is ever collected.

  • Email Address: Collected during account creation for authentication purposes only. We use Supabase Auth and/or Google Sign-In. We do not send you marketing emails.
  • Display Name & Avatar Emoji: Your chosen profile name and avatar character, used to identify you within Social Squads.
  • Aggregate Attendance Percentage: Your overall attendance percentage (a single number), shared only with members of squads you voluntarily join.
  • Squad Membership Data: Squad IDs, invite codes, and member rosters for groups you create or join.
  • Subscription Status: Your Pro plan type, purchase date, and expiry date (managed via RevenueCat and stored in our database to validate your entitlements).
  • Voluntary Improvement Program (Opt-In): Mobile device information, location details, and other usage diagnostics are collected and sent to us only if you voluntarily select to send them to help us troubleshoot issues and improve the app.

If you enable full Cloud Sync (Pro only): Your semester data, subjects, time slots, attendance records, holidays, assignments, exams, and campus location names are backed up to our Supabase database so you can restore them across devices. This data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and stored securely. We do not view, analyze, sell, or use your synced academic data for any purpose other than providing the backup/sync service to you.

C. Data Collected Automatically by Third-Party SDKs:

  • Google AdMob: May collect device advertising identifiers, IP address, device model, OS version, and general (non-precise) location to serve ads. This applies to free-tier users only.
  • RevenueCat: Collects anonymous purchase transaction data and billing identifiers to manage subscriptions.
  • Google Sign-In: If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your Google account name, email, and profile photo URL.

We do not have direct control over data collected by these third-party SDKs. Please review their respective privacy policies linked in Section 5.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information strictly for the following purposes:

  • Providing App Functionality: To deliver attendance tracking, bunk budget calculations, timetable management, and auto-marking features.
  • Account Authentication: To verify your identity when you sign in via email/password or Google Sign-In.
  • Cloud Sync & Backup: To back up and restore your academic data across devices (Pro subscribers who opt in).
  • Social Squads: To allow you and your friends to share attendance percentages within voluntarily joined groups.
  • Subscription Management: To verify your Pro subscription status and entitlements.
  • Serving Advertisements: To display ads to free-tier users via Google AdMob.
  • Improving the App: If you voluntarily choose to share mobile information, location, or other diagnostics, we use this strictly to debug bugs and optimize application performance.

We do NOT use your data for: Profiling, behavioral targeting, selling to third parties, data mining, training AI models, or any purpose not directly related to the App's stated functionality.

4. Prominent Disclosure: Background Location Access

AttendEase requests background location access (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION, ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION) for the Proximity Auto-Marking feature. This section serves as the required prominent disclosure per Google Play policy.

Purpose: When you enable auto-marking, the App monitors your device's location in the background to detect whether you are within a classroom perimeter you have pre-configured, during a scheduled class time. If you are, the App automatically marks your attendance as "Present".

Key Facts About Location Data Processing:

  • Location coordinates are processed entirely on your device within background tasks. They are never transmitted to our servers or any third-party service, unless you voluntarily select to send them to us to improve our app.
  • Location data is never combined with advertising identifiers, analytics tools, or user profiles.
  • Location data is never sold, shared, or disclosed to any third party.
  • Background location access is disabled by default. You must explicitly enable it through the App's settings.
  • You can revoke background location permission at any time through your device's system settings (Settings → Apps → AttendEase → Permissions → Location).
  • Even classroom coordinates (lat/lng/radius) that you save are stored only in your local SQLite database. If Cloud Sync is enabled, only the location name (e.g., "Room 201") is synced — not GPS coordinates.

5. Third-Party Services & SDKs

The App integrates the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy governing how they collect and process data:

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party. We share data only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Social Squads (User-Initiated): If you voluntarily join a squad, your display name, avatar, and aggregate attendance percentage are visible to other squad members.
  • Third-Party SDKs: As described in Section 5, certain SDKs may collect device-level data independently. We do not control or have access to this data.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, or legal process.

7. Data Security

We implement reasonable security measures to protect your data:

  • All data in transit between the App and our cloud servers is encrypted using TLS (HTTPS).
  • Cloud data is stored on Supabase, which uses enterprise-grade PostgreSQL with row-level security (RLS) policies ensuring users can only access their own data.
  • Local data is stored in an on-device SQLite database.
  • Authentication tokens are stored using expo-secure-store, which utilizes the device's secure keychain/keystore.

No method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Data Retention & Deletion

You have full control over your data:

  • Local Data: Stored on your device until you clear app storage or uninstall the App. We have no access to it and cannot recover it once deleted.
  • Cloud Data: If you created an account and enabled sync, your data is retained on our servers until you request deletion. You can request deletion by:
    • Using the in-app account deletion option in Settings, or
    • Emailing us at waytokairo@gmail.com with your account email.
  • Upon receiving a deletion request, all cloud data (profile, attendance records, subjects, squads, subscriptions) will be permanently deleted within 30 days.
  • Subscription Data: RevenueCat may retain anonymous purchase records as required by app store policies and financial regulations.

9. Children's Privacy

AttendEase is designed for high school and university/college students. The App does not target, market to, or knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction).

If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child under 13 has provided personal data through the App's cloud sync feature, please contact us immediately at waytokairo@gmail.com. We will promptly investigate and delete such data from our servers.

10. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data (see Section 8).
  • Portability: Request your data in a portable format.
  • Objection: Object to certain processing of your data.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App, legal requirements, or Google Play Developer Program policies. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
